AI Agent
An AI agent is a software system that takes a goal, plans a sequence of steps to reach it, executes those steps using tools (APIs, databases, browsers, code), and adapts when steps fail. Modern agents are typically powered by large language models and operate through tool-use loops.
AI Agent in practice
Business examples include an agent that reads incoming invoices, matches them to purchase orders and drafts the entry for approval, or one that triages a support inbox and prepares replies. Production agents run with narrow permissions, a log of every tool call and a person who approves actions with consequences, such as payments or messages to clients.
