BC privacy rules that shape an AI project
Businesses: BC PIPA. BC's Personal Information Protection Act regulates the information practices of corporations, non-profits, charities, trade unions, credit unions and other private organizations. It is deemed substantially similar to PIPEDA. PIPEDA still applies to transfers across borders and to federally regulated businesses such as banks and telecoms.
Public bodies: FIPPA. Amendments to BC's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, enacted November 25, 2021, removed the general rule that personal information had to be stored and accessed in Canada. Public bodies now complete an additional assessment, inside the privacy impact assessment, when sensitive personal information is disclosed to be stored outside Canada. The head of the public body decides whether to proceed.
What it changes for AI. Most large language models are hosted in the United States or run global processing. How we work with BC teams
- Readiness Review (1 week). One 90-minute session, a six-dimension score and 3–5 candidate use cases.
- AI Opportunity Audit (2 weeks). 6–10 interviews, 10+ ranked use cases and a 12-month roadmap, with PIPA or FIPPA questions noted per use case.
- AI Pilot Sprint (6 weeks). One workflow built and handed over, for example document extraction into your line-of-business system.
Delivery is remote from our base in Ottawa. In our experience a Vancouver kickoff works well by video; an on-site day is arranged when several teams need to meet together. The three steps are the first phases of the Remolda Cycle.
